The Final Insult: A Lost Domain

Nov. 02, 2002

They lost their jobs, their careers, even their apartments in the Internet bust. But the final insult for many Web workers is learning that somewhere in the churn of e-mail addresses and phone numbers from the dot-com bust, they've lost their personal domains as well.

For many with stalled careers, a personal domain is a lifeboat for identity and self-esteem.

Computer scientist Scott Draves was laid off from his engineering job. Even the ISP that handled his personal e-mail had shut down. But Draves took heart that his personal programming project, the Electric Sheep screensaver, was doing well.

The software, which uses desktops to crunch animated fractals in the manner of SETI@Home, ships as part of most Linux distributions. The program's arresting graphics have appeared in Wired magazine and were selected for display at this week's 11th annual International Symposium on Electronic Art in Nagoya, Japan.

But shortly before ISEA began, Draves learned that someone else had revived his old e-mail address and used it to send a request to Network Solutions, changing electricsheep.org's administrative contact from Draves to a new name, address and phone number. The new administrative contact then transferred the domain to another registrar, and then to another in France, listing a fake address and phone number for contact.

"It's so frustrating," Draves said.

He claimed he opened a fraud report with Network Solutions this week, but added, "My initial discussion was not promising. They told me they didn't have any record of my ever owning electricsheep.org."
