DNS Structure: New Top Level Domains
The board of directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN), a
nonprofit group governing domain names, has approved seven new top suffixes in
2001.
These new domain names are the first major additions since the DNS system was
developed in the 1980s.
The new domain name extensions will compete with the seven
existing domain name types, which include .net, .com, .org, .gov, .mil, and .edu.
Some of the new extensions are expected to appear in use by mid-2001. It is
similar to adding area codes to the national phone system to accommodate
growth.
